Rufino Garza y Zoila García Parents of Serafín Garza García

As you are aware, I am still continuing my research on the family history.  For the past several weeks, I have concentrated in learning about more about Rufino Garza and Soila Garcia the great-grandparents of our generation and parents of Serafin Garza Garcia.  I would like to share with you some of the information I have found that you may find interesting.

Rufino and Soila were married in 1888 when he was 26 and she was 16.  Their first daughter, Petra, died in June of 1889 from fever when she was 6 months old.  She probably had a severe infection and with no antibiotics, the infection got out of control.  Their second child, Fidela Garza Garcia, died when she was six months old on April 30, 1890, a year after their first child, Petra, died and when Zoila was pregnant with Serafin.  It is indicated that she died of "debilidad," (weakness).  I could only guess that she might have had a heart problem.  Their third daughter, Dolores Garza Garcia, died when she was seven years old, in December 1898,  from what seems to be a severe case of the tonsils.  Rufino was 39 and Soila was 29 at this time.  Their next child, Maria Garza Garcia, was born dead in February 1900 about a year after Dolores had died and when Rufino was 40 and Soila was 30 years old.  It is dificult to imagine the tragedy of these deaths.

However, those tragic years from 1888 to 1900 also produced other children that survived.  Among them:  Serafín Garza García in 1890, Genaro Garza Garcia in 1895, Maria (del la) Rosa Garza Garcia in 1899, and Soila Garza García in July of 1902.  I have not found information on any other children they might have had in the decade of the 1890s

Although we all know about Serafin's family, there is evidence that contact among us is being lost, and at this rate, I think that relationships will be lost in one or two generations.  I hope that someone will continue to update and maintain the genealogy data base  on this branch of the family (the Serafin branch) that I have started.

Genaro Garza Garcia married Dolores Garza en San Luis Potosí in 1917,  and like Serafin, returned to live in Villa de Garcia after the death of his father, Rufino Garza.  Maria de la Rosa Married Raul Fuentes in Villa de Garcia in 1928 and I would very much like to find and document their family genealogy.  I suppose they had many children and many grandshildren (our second cousins) that would be our age by now.  Although the family name of Garza would have disappear with some of them by now.  Zoila Garza Married Jose Flores in San Luis Potosi in September of 1921 and although we visited her family there many years ago (with my mother Concepcion Garza in the 1960s) we have lost contact with them.    Zoila died in San Luis Potosí en 1969 at the age of 67.   Although it would be more difficult to find information on Zoila's family, I am sure that the roots of Genaro's and Maria de la Rosa's family are in Garcia and it would be interesting to learn more about those cousins.

What makes me very curious is why Rufino and Zoila took the whole family and went to live in San Luis Potosí having property and a life in Villa de García?  Such a move was not trivial in those times.  Moreover, why did the children return to live in Villa de Garcia after Rufino died?  I haven't found any family links to them in San Luis Potosi.  Rufino was a merchant, perhaps he saw opportunities in San Luis that he did not have in Villa de Garcia.   Perhaps the political and social turbulence of that time in Mexico influenced that type of movement.
