A Christmas Wish

It's the time of year to reflect on our lives in the past year – for what we did, for what we didn't do or what we could have done.  For many of us, this is the time when we celebrate the birth of Christ.  In Mexico, and in particular in Villa de Garcia, N.L. in the 1950s, I remember we used to pray the rosaries in the advent novena, traditionally called "Posadas."   The "Posadas" were an interesting invention in the mid-16th century, They were not only a way to pray the rosary in the advent novena, but to do it in private homes, usually in the homes of people who were well-off economically.  Each chosen house sponsored a "party" after the rosary.  Although the party was for all the participants of the Posada, it was also a way to direct the benefit and small gifts to families and children with fewer economic resources. 

 

Now days, many of us only pretend to celebrate the birth of Christ and have transformed the "Posada" from a rosary into just the a party with delicious food (often with tamales), drinks, music and dancing.  Most of us simply follow the Posadas not only for the feasting, but also because they allow us to be closer to family and friends, and because it is a way to allows us to feel closer to our social group.  The have been part of a social evolution where we have been accepting the secular version of the Posada and the original reason is disappearing.

 

But ignoring the fact that the religious aspects may be no longer a part of the Posadas, it is great to see the wonder in the eyes of the little ones in these gatherings.  It's also very interesting to hear the goals, desires and achievements of young adults;  to talk about the struggles, pride, and challenges of adult family members.  And, as a bonus, also listen to the complaints of adult family members of their aging bodies.  Part of the benefit is that we can watch them compete and try to outdo each other over who's body part hurts the most.  It's part of our annual ritual and we love it.

 

This time of the year is a time of joy, a time of peace and a time to spread good feelings.  That's why I hope this season finds you in good health, in the company of your loved ones and in harmony with nature.   With a humble heart, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Safe and Happy New Year.

Deseo Navideño

Es la temporada del año para reflexionar sobre nuestras vidas en el año que pasó - por lo que hicimos, por lo que no hicimos o lo que podríamos haber hecho.  Para muchos de nosotros, este es el tiempo en que celebramos el nacimiento de Cristo.  En México que yo recuerdo, y en particular en Villa de García, N.L. en la década de 1950, solíamos rezar la novena de adviento, tradicionalmente llamada "Posadas."   Las "Posadas" fueron un invento interesante a mediados del siglo XVI, no solo porque fue una forma de rezar el rosario en la novena de adviento, sino hacerlo en las casas particulares, generalmente en casas de personas de buena posición económica.  Cada casa elegida patrocinaban una "fiesta" después del rosario.  Aunque la fiesta era para todos los participantes de la posada, era también un modo de dirigir el beneficio y regalitos a las familias y a los niños de menos recursos económicos.  

 

En estos tiempos, muchos de nosotros solo pretendemos celebrar el nacimiento de Cristo y hemos transformado la "Posada" de un rosario en la novena de adviento a solo la parte festiva con comida sabrosa (muchas veces con tamales), bebidas, música y baile.  La mayoría de nosotros simplemente seguimos las Posadas no nomas por la fiesta, sino también porque nos permiten estar más cerca a la familia y amigos, y también porque nos permite sentirnos más cerca con nuestro grupo social.  Las posadas han sido una evolución social donde hemos estado aceptando la parte secular y la base original se está desapareciendo.

 

Pero ignorando que la base religiosa casi ya no es parte de la Posada, siempre es genial ver la maravilla de navidad en los ojos de los más pequeños en estas fiestas.  También, es muy interesante escuchar las metas, los deseos y los logros de los jóvenes,  y es bonito platicar sobre las luchas, el orgullo y los desafíos de los miembros adultos de la familia.  Y, como beneficio adicional, también es divertido escuchar las quejas de los miembros mayores de edad de la familia de sus cuerpos envejecidos.  Parte del beneficio es que podemos verlos competir y tratar de superarse unos a otros sobre quien tiene la parte más adolorida.  Es parte de nuestro ritual anual y nos encanta.

 

Esta temporada del año es un tiempo de alegría, un tiempo de paz y un tiempo para difundir buenos sentimientos.  Es por eso que espero que esta temporada los encuentre en buena salud, en compañía de sus seres queridos y en armonía con la naturaleza.   Con un corazón humilde,  les deseo a todos ustedes una Feliz Navidad y un Feliz, Seguro y Prospero Año Nuevo.
